Low Dose Allergen Therapy (LDA)

LDA, short for Low Dose Allergens or Ultra Low Dose Enzyme Activated Immunotherapy, is an innovative approach to immunotherapy that uses extremely small doses of beta glucuronidase and specific allergens to help regulate the immune system.

It is theorized that LDA works by encouraging the production of T-regulatory cells (T Reg cells), which help balance immune responses and reduce inappropriate reactions where the body mistakenly identifies harmless substances as threats.

Originally pioneered in the United States by W.A. Shrader, Jr., MD in 2002, LDA has been used as an option for individuals with a variety of allergy and sensitivity concerns.

  • Treatments are initially administered approximately every two months, with the frequency typically decreasing over time.
  • For adults, treatment involves one to three tiny injections into the inner arm.
  • For children who may be uncomfortable with needles, small drops can be placed between the lower lip and gums.
  • LDA may be used for sensitivities involving pollens, dust, mites, animal dander, foods, and chemicals.

LDA has been used for conditions such as hay fever, asthma, eczema, food allergies, and other immune-related sensitivities. It has also been safely used in young children, including infants as young as one month of age.

How Is LDA Different From Conventional Allergy Immunotherapy?

Conventional allergy immunotherapy, commonly known as “allergy shots,” works through a different immune pathway than Low Dose Allergen Therapy (LDA).

Traditional immunotherapy begins with allergen doses around 1 to 10,000 and gradually increases to much higher concentrations. The goal is to stimulate production of IgG “blocking antibodies,” which help prevent mast cells from releasing histamine — the chemical responsible for many allergy symptoms.

While effective for some patients, achieving these higher doses may cause significant reactions before improvement occurs. Possible reactions can include swelling, severe allergic responses, anaphylaxis, and other serious complications.

  • LDA uses extremely low doses of allergens and works through a cell-mediated immune response.
  • The highest possible LDA dose is estimated to be at least one million times lower than conventional immunotherapy doses.
  • LDA may be used for a wider range of sensitivities, including reactions involving foods and chemicals, while conventional allergy shots are primarily focused on inhaled allergens.
  • More than one million LDA doses have been administered without reported fatal or life-threatening systemic reactions.

Traditional allergy shots are usually given multiple times per week during the initial phase and require ongoing maintenance treatments. Even after reaching maintenance doses, stopping treatment may result in symptoms returning within months for many patients.

Are There Any Disadvantages to LDA?

Like any therapy, LDA requires commitment and preparation. Most patients need to follow a very restricted diet beginning the day before treatment, continuing on the day of treatment, and for the day afterward.

Certain medications, including antihistamines and aspirin, may significantly reduce or interfere with the effectiveness of LDA if taken during the three weeks following treatment. Patients should discuss all medications and supplements with their healthcare provider before beginning therapy.
