Malakand encompassing nine districts – Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Dir Upper & Lower, Chitral Upper & Lower, and Bajaur Tribal District – spans an area of 32,007 square kilometers and is home to a population of 8.7 million. This region has a rich history, formerly comprising the princely states of Swat, Dir, Chitral, and the Malakand.

Malakand boasts breathtaking landscapes, featuring snow-capped mountains, rivers, orchards, and meadows, attracting tourists from around the world. Strategically located in the north of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, it borders the Karakoram Highway at Besham, the Afghan border with Dir & Chitral, and the Wakhan strip.

Gateway of Ancient Heritage

This region has been mentioned in ancient Greek accounts and by other historians, and was once a hub of Aryan and Ghandhara civilizations. Alexander the Great passed through this route to India in 327 B.C., facing fierce resistance. The area has also witnessed the invasions of the Sakas, Kushans, and white Huns, and was influenced by Ashoka of the Maurian dynasty, who adopted Buddhism and spread it throughout the region. During this time, over 1,400 monasteries and 18,000 monks flourished, making this area a prominent center of Ghandhara civilization.
