Alexander the Great passed through this route to India in 327 B.C., facing fierce resistance. The area has also witnessed the invasions of the Sakas, Kushans, and white Huns, and was influenced by Ashoka of the Maurian dynasty, who adopted Buddhism and spread it throughout the region. During this time, over 1,400 monasteries and 18,000 monks flourished, making this area a prominent center of Ghandhara civilization.
